Perfume has long been a way for both men and women to express themselves and to uplift. When we apply our favorite scents it gives us a sense of joy, confidence and ties us together. It’s a way to express your mood, the season and your personal scent truly becomes a part of you!
When you think about the concept of fragrance from a health standpoint it’s kind of crazy. The thought of spraying tons of chemicals and unknown ingredients, sometimes multiple times a day, to your body’s largest organ doesn’t seem like a good choice, healthwise.
Perfume, like any other beauty product, should be thought about and the ingredients and what it’s made of should matter. We tend to “let it slide” because so many of us have identified with a specific scent for years and marked it as our own. We want to educate you on the difference between synthetic fragrance and natural fragrance.
NATURAL VS. CLEAN VS. TRADITIONAL
How Are Natural Fragrances Different?
TRADITIONAL: Created using mainly synthetic fragrance- manufactured molecules that mimic the aromas we all know.
CLEAN: Discloses their ingredients and typically created with safe synthetic materials. Most “clean” fragrances only have a few natural ingredients, or sometimes none at all.
NATURAL: Each ingredient is derived from a natural source. A rare practice in the fragrance industry due to high cost and lack of availability.
There are plenty of popular perfumes on the market containing petroleum-derived ingredients and dozens more potentially dangerous chemicals and synthetics like phthalates, which are used to make plastics more flexible and are known hormone disruptors. What’s worse is that in order to protect industry “trade secrets,” fragrance companies aren’t actually forced to disclose their entire formulation. This is why we always warn to look out for “fragrance” when listed in ingredients. Similar to “natural flavors” in foods… What does “fragrance” even mean in your cosmetics ingredients list? Therein lies the “secrets”. Scary! Companies are able to hide all kinds of toxic ingredients into this label and not disclose anything.
Thankfully, there has been an influx of natural perfumes recently that are not only non-toxic and non-secretive in formulation but that smell amazing and give us all the same uplifting vibes ordinary perfumes have given us.
