Grateful, excited, overwhelmed – all feelings that describe receiving not 1 but 4 wedding invites all in the same week. Once I got over the fact that weddings were officially back, my next thought was, “what tf*** am I going to wear?”
Pre-covid, I revelled in the idea of dressing for weddings. The more save-the-dates, the more creative and excited I was. Celebrating love and dancing till all hours in the morning until my feet were numb was my favourite hobby. I’d design custom dresses after my favourite movie icons – like this one from How to Lose a Guy in 10 days and spend more time than I’d like to admit guessing who was catering the midnight table (pancakes, poutine or pastries? Or all 3?) I’ve missed the art of getting ready for any event but especially a big, fat wedding.
Since I couldn’t remember the last time I thought about actually getting dressed up in a real dress with heels and decadent accessories, I started searching and saving plenty of options. With how much trends have changed in the last year, most of these dresses can even be styled down back to sneakers or flat sandals. We love options.
I’m sharing the top picks for every kind of wedding under the sun from beach to backyard. Here are 8 dress silhouettes that will get you excited to get dressed up again.
For a Garden Wedding
It’s floral and it’s groundbreaking. This green tiered dress by Reformation hugs you in all the right places and has just the right amount of feminine details. If prints aren’t your thing, this flirty poplin maxi is an effortless option not only for outdoor weddings but bridal showers alike.
Travelling for a Wedding
With the urge to leave our confined spaces and fly over an ocean (or even just a border), dresses that pack well but don’t compromise on style are essential yet not easy to come by. This slip dress with lace trim detailing is stunning and ultra flattering. Ideal for dancing beneath the sun at a beach wedding, ready to change into flat sandals to run off to watch the sunrise.
A Black Tie Affair
Black tie can be intimidating to some. Simplify the dress code and your life by asking- ”if I were invited to the Oscars, what would I wear?” This past week at the Cannes Film Festival, actress Marta Pozzan resurrected a classic silhouette, the strapless black gown. Simple yet statement making, this is the LBD that should be hanging in everyone’s closet. This Wolford bodycon dress is bodyshaping and acts as a blank canvas for accessories play.
Intimate wedding
Intimate gatherings tend to call for shorter hemlines which is why I love playing up a print. Especially when it’s animal. This tiger print number by Realisation Par hits all the right notes – a crystal buttoned bodice, deep v neckline and shirred sleeves make this sexy and chic all at once. If a tonal color is more your speed, this pink linen Zara dress will stun every guest on the big day.
Trendy Wedding
As if Cannes wasn’t inspiration enough, designer Giorgia Tordini and friends were in Lake Como, Italy for a wedding and donned head to toe sequins in gowns by the Attico and Alexander Vauthier. For a daring statement, opt for this cut out style by Bec & Bridge or this 90’s inspired satin dress with silver ring.
