I got into making my own candles around 10 years ago after seeing it done by Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere. I’ve made them for several friends as gifts and even as the party favor for my best friend’s bridal shower. It’s so simple to do and only takes about 20-25 minutes. You can use any base of your choice, the first time I made them in tea cups just like Emily.
This is also a great way to reuse those bases that you love and put a better wax for your health. Most commercial candles are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum, coal, or shale oil, it has been found to contain known carcinogens (cancer-causing notes) such as benzene. By making your own candles you can choose a safer one, like soy wax.
Here is what you need:
Base of choice
- Mason Jar
- Old (cleaned out) candle
- Glass or ceramic jar
- Tea Cup
Pot to Melt Wax
- Old cloth
- Metal, glass or ceramic poorer
Wick
- 3″ – 6″ long
- Holders (chop stick, fork)
Wax
- Soy Wax
- Shaved or blocks
Optional
- Essential Oil
- Dye
Directions:
- Melt the wax in a pot. If you don’t have a thermometer, don’t worry. You can eyeball this step. Once all the wax has melted, turn down the heat and leave for 1-2 minutes.
- Secure wick – dip in wax and hold in place in base.
- Remove the pot from heat and allow to cool for about 5 – 8 minutes. If you do have a thermometer, let wax cool to 150 or 140F
- Add color and fragrance (optional) – stir
- Fill ¾ of the base with wax – hold wick with chopstick (or pen, fork)
- Fill remainder of the base with wax
- Let cool at least 2 hours
- Trim the wick down to 1/4 – 1/8 of an inch in length.
