Sex Toys Advice with Alex Chinks, Psy.D.

With love in the air this month, many of us want to spice things up in the bedroom with some toys. But before you amazon prime the fuzzy handcuffs and sex position dice, PLEASE take my advice and invest in one of these instead! I’ve gathered together some of my favourite sex toys for every situation. It’s important to remember that we all have bodies that are shaped slightly differently and sexual preferences that can vary tremendously. So if you don’t see something that works for you, don’t stress! A good sex-positive shop can guide you to the perfect toy for you! And remember, always use a water-based lubricant with your (silicone) sex toys! I recommend Slippery Stuff Personal Lubricant Gel.

So Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Shopping!

For the Newbie:

If this is going to be your first sex toy, then there’s a few things I think it should have. The first being, options! I recommend a vibrator that can be used both internally and externally. This gives you a chance to explore and learn what you like. It also can be used as a dildo when not vibrating. It should be silicone (easy to clean, comfortable in hand), rechargeable, and have a variety of speeds or settings. With that being said, my top pick is the Je Joue Fifi Rabbit Vibrator. It’s sleek, modern design doesn’t scream sex toy, and it’s “rabbit ears” contain separate motors which give this little bunny a lot of power in a quiet package! It makes a very manageable internal vibrator or dildo and the bunny ears or main body are great for clitoral stimulation.

For the Couple

There are a number of products on the market right now geared towards couples use. Vibrators that can be used together or controlled by a partner using an app or a remote control. While they sound cool, in reality they can be tricky and especially hard to get “just right” given everyone’s unique body shapes and sexual preferences. With that said, I feel that a solid little bullet vibrator or a handheld vibrator like the Dame Products Pom Flexible Vibrator is a nice first step into couples play. Not too large, not too loud, and able to be used in a multitude of ways, one of these can be just the thing to heat things up and take things to the next level. Use it to keep clitoral stimulation going during penetrative sex, use it to enhance oral sex for both of you, or playfully place it on your partners most sensitive spots.

For Solo Play

If you’re looking to move beyond your vibrator, and you enjoy clitoral orgasms, an air pressure stimulator may be a good choice. Using a motor, these toys produce the sensation of rhythmic suction and vibration (though it’s not actually suctioned) that can be likened to oral sex. Many women find these toys to be great for a quick, powerful orgasm, others say it helps with a drawn out orgasm. Most will also report that you should use it a few times as there’s a bit of a learning curve with this toy. The original in this category (with an unfortunate name), is the Womanizer Liberty Clitoral Stimulator. I think it’s a great option.

For Adventurous Internal Exploration

Do you feel like you’ve had your share of vibrators, dildos and butt plugs and want to try something a little different? Have you discovered that you enjoy internal stimulation more than external, or you want to explore if you do? Then a glass dildo may be a good choice for you. These smooth works of art, in safety glass (think pyrex) offer a wide range of possibilities for play, both alone and with a partner. They can be heated up or cooled down, and they come in a variety of shapes, aiming to please particular areas (g-spot amongst others). Google yoni massage and settle in for a journey with one of these dildos. I’m recommending the Crystal G-Spot Wand Glass Dildo, but it’s worth looking around for that unique shape that suits your needs.

For Him

Sex toys are for everyone! So why not bring your guy on board by introducing him to a toy? I like to recommend a toy that can be used both solo and as a couple as it offers more versatility. Something like the Fun Factory Manta is a good choice for someone new to sex toys, someone looking to add a little something to their solo play, or for a couple. Its little silicone “wings” vibrate and can wrap around, meaning versatility for the user. I also feel that it doesn’t scream “man toy” as something like a masturbation sleeve does, making it easy to transition to couples play. Fun fact, many women enjoy using it on themselves as well!
