Acupuncture is a healing technique of traditional Chinese medicine that has been around for over 3,000 years. Katherine, does it weekly and has for 6 years and swears by it as her first method of treatment for any ailment, anxiety and working on issues in her body. When done right by a trained professional, it is a safe and effective method for restoring balance and relieving pain in the body. We wanted to give those of you who aren’t familiar with acupuncture a little run down of what it entails and what the benefits are.
Acupuncture is an ancient practice that isn’t traditionally based in science and medicine. They believe the human body is filled with an invisible life-giving force called “qi” (pronounced “chee”) and when the qi is flowing well and going to the right places, the person will feel good both mentally and physically. When the qi is not flowing well or is blocked, it would result in illness or not feeling great.
This concept is very much in line of the way we think at GLW. We like to think of our health and well-being as a 360 approach and when things are functioning optimally and everything is “jiving” together you are going to feel amazing and full of energy and life force, in this case qi. It’s no secret that you’re more prone to illness when feeling stressed or anxious. When you’re relaxed and healthy, your body physically reflects that too. After all, your mood, mental health, and general well-being do affect your physical health.
Acupuncture is based on specific anatomic points called “acupoints.” These points are stimulated using tiny, thin needles, which correct the flow of energy (qi). This treatment can be used for a wide range of disorders including emotional disorders, digestive disorders, hormone imbalances, pain disorders, and chronic diseases.
Benefits of Acupuncture:
- Muscular pain relief- from an injury, chronic pain etc…
- Horomone imbalance- irregular periods, fertility and trouble conceiving, menopause, PMS, restoring ovulation etc…
- Anxiety, depression, mood disorders
- Sleep- restless sleep, insomnia, snoring, apnea
- Headaches and migraines
- Allergies
- Pregnancy- nausea, postpartum, birth, back pain etc…
Truly, the benefits of acupuncture cover every single condition because the notion is to restore balance to the body, correct blockages and allow the body to work optimally, as the body knows how to do very well. We generally get in the way with extreme stress, poor lifestyle choices etc…
There are many licensed practitioners all over the world who help numerous people. The needles are painless, the sessions are approximately 40-60 minutes and depending what you’re working on there will be a series of sessions, generally 1 week apart. Some people see an acupuncturist weekly. Others will go for a series of treatments to treat a specific issue. As mentioned before, Katherine goes weekly and has for years and swears by it overall health and wellbeing. Let us know if you try it out!
