Food Facts: Chocolate

With Easter right around the corner, there’s no better time than now to discuss the benefits of chocolate. Yes, you read that right! Chocolate is not just a sweet treat but can actually be super healthy too, especially if you’re eating dark chocolate or cocoa powder.

Benefits of Dark Chocolate and Cocoa Powder

Packed With Antioxidants – Did you know that chocolate contains a higher level of antioxidants than most super fruit juices ? With high levels of polyphenols and flavanols, dark chocolate is filled with antioxidants that are essential in fighting free radicals and protecting the body from damage and diseases.

Supports Skin Health – While eating too much chocolate can be associated with acne, consuming certain types of chocolate in moderation can actually be favorable for skin health. Studies show that it can help improve blood flow to the skin, increase hydration and reduce roughness. Flavanol-rich chocolate is also known to protect the skin against damage caused by ultraviolet light.

Reduces Blood Pressure – Chocolate isn’t just a sweet treat, but it’s actually known for lowering blood pressure levels which can aid in protecting the body against conditions like heart disease and strokes.

Lowers Cholesterol Levels– High cholesterol levels can also lead to heart disease but luckily chocolate can help with that too. Chocolate contains cocoa butter which is packed with healthy fats and is known for reducing overall cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

Improves Cardiovascular Health – We all know that chocolate and hearts go hand in hand especially on Valentine’s day, but chocolate can actually help our hearts way more than we think. Flavonols which are highly present in chocolate, help improve blood flow leading to the heart and brain. They also help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, and blot clots, all of which help lower the risk of heart disease and other heart related conditions.

Possess a Strong Nutritional Profile –  Although chocolate should definitely not replace your source of nutrients, it is rich in fiber and also contains high levels manganese, copper, iron and magnesium.

Since chocolate is high in calories, eating too much of it can cause weight gain in addition to acne, headaches and bloating so make sure to consume it in moderation. We love having a small piece of dark chocolate when we’re craving something sweet or using Enjoy Life dark chocolate chips in some of our favorite cookie and muffin recipes. Regardless what brand you choose, try and look for one that has a higher percentage of cocoa solids to make sure you’re getting the most out of this delicious yet healthy treat.
