When I moved out I found myself asking; “But what do I need?” so often. That question was often followed by; “Okay, and where do I get that?”.  I came from a household where my parents mainly cooked (okay, my dad mainly cooked…sorry mom) so when I moved out, I had a lot of questions about what I needed for the kitchen. What were the staple items that I needed?

The GLW team has put together a great starter pack list! These are perfect for someone just moving out on their own and great for someone who’s looking to take their culinary skills up a notch.

Knife Set

  • Different knives do different things. Getting a basic knife set will help you level up your cooking prep!
Y-Peelers

  • This is a very used kitchen tool. Peeling is something you will need to do often and this makes it easy and quick.
Pots and Pans

  • Good idea to invest in a good set of pots and pans, you will keep these for years and years. Cant cook too much without them! For more info on safe cookware click here
Cast Iron Skillet

  • Our preferred way to cook. Cast iron will outlive you and possibly your children. They get better with time and use and are a healthy cooking option! They are also so easy to transfer from stove to oven and the taste you get from using one is noticeable.
Measuring Cups and Spoons

  • Because recipes are specific and when you’re starting out its important to learn proper proportions
Silicone Bakeware

  • We swear by these because it doesn’t require cooking spray. They are non-stick and so easy to store.
Baking Tray

  • These are a must for so many reasons. They will also last forever and you will use daily!
Silicone Mat

  • Who wants to clean more than they have to…not us! We love a good silicone mat, it makes clean up easy and its eco friendly!
Immersion Blender

  • This kind of does it all. You can blend soups in your pot, you can whisk bake goods with the whisk, there is even a mini food processor! So many ways to use this and it comes In very handy.
Oven Mitts

  • Because a towel just doesn’t cut it!
Mixing Bowls

  • Trust us, these will end up being your most used item. Get an array of sizes, these make prep easy and are handy to have for quick salads and dressings.
Cutting Board

  • Prep is a big part of being a home chef. We recommend getting a few sizes!
