Supplement Spotlight: Astragalus

If there’s one supplement that’s worth adding to your regime, astragalus is it. Known to help prolong life, astragalus is one of the most powerful adaptogens in the world. This plant is primarily cultivated in the Northern Hemisphere and can grow up to 4 feet in height. It has been used as a natural remedy in traditional medicine across the globe for thousands of years and still used today in treating a multitude of diseases and health issues.

Benefits of Astragalus

Astragalus is a plant based supplement that offers a ton of health benefits, most of which stem from 3 main components:

  • Flavonoids – These compounds possess antioxidant capabilities which means that they fight free radicals and help prevent cancer and other illnesses.
  • Saponins – Known to enhance the immune system and lower cholesterol levels, saponins are also said to help with cancer prevention.
  • Polysaccharides – Essential for the immune system, polysaccharides have many anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory characteristics.

In addition to the above, astragalus can also treat the cold, flu and general respiratory issues; heal wounds and scars; aid with chemotherapy symptoms; possess anti-aging capabilities; regulate diabetes, protect the heart and liver; boost immunity for people suffering from viruses like herpes or HIV, aa well as many other significant benefits.

While there are over 2,000 species of astragalus, Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus are the two types used in supplements. There are several forms of astragalus including capsules, teas, tinctures and injections; however, we prefer using a powder form and add it to our smoothies when we feel that our immune systems need that extra boost.

It’s important to note that for most people, this natural supplement has minor risks and side effects; however, it can negatively interact with certain prescription drugs like lithium or immunosuppressants, and is therefore not a good option for everyone. As such, Make sure to speak to a professional before adding it to your diet to determine if it’s right for you, for how long you should take it for and the proper dosage.
