It’s 2020 and it’s important that we all do our part to help the environment and reduce the amount of plastic we use. I don’t think it’s realistic to assume that you can change all your habits overnight, I am a big believer in small changes add up to big results. I am by no means perfect and have a way to go in the sustainability and consumption department, but here are a few kitchen staples that I swear by that are ecofriendly and a good step in the right direction of becoming more SUSTAINABLE. Hopefully this inspires you to find little ways to do better for the environment.
Stasher Bags
I love me a stasher bag. These have replaced Ziplock bags for me almost fully! Not only are these reusable bags easy to STASH in your purse or car, but I use them at home as well. They are perfect to organize my food in the fridge and freezer. You can even use them to cook sous-vide, there are many uses for them! Stasher bags come in all different sizes and colours. Yes, they’re pricey compared to plastic bags like Ziplock but overtime you will save because they’re reusable and you won’t need to repurchase constantly.
Reusable Straws
I drink a lot of different beverages, including my daily lemon water, my morning smoothie, etc… I am big lover of drinking from straws. Luckily, there are so many options for reusable more sustainable straws. I use different straws for smoothies that are wider and another type of straw for my lemon water and other drinks that aren’t as thick as smoothies. They are normally sold in a pack of 4-6, depending on which type of straw purchased and even come with a cleaning brush.
Silicone Suction Lids
Why use plastic wrap when you can use one of these? My whole kitchen is covered in these, not only are they adorable but they are so practical. These lids can be reused over and over and will change your food storage game. They keep your bowls tight, so your food or leftovers inside will not go to waste. These lids also keep your food hot or cold, depending on what is under them. They are microwave and dishwasher safe and can hold up to 500F of heat.
Silicone Baking Mats
If you have been watching me for awhile then you have seen me use these nonstop. I love cooking but hate cleaning… Especially baking trays! These silicone baking mats cover your baking trays, so you don’t have to clean them after, and I also find my food cooks better when I use them. They are non-stick so no cooking spray required, and they are reusable, dishwasher safe and one of my favorite kitchen items.
Reusable Insulated Bottles
This seems like a no brainer but you would be surprised how many people are still purchasing water bottles. I personally enjoy drinking out of a insulated bottle more and love all the cute colors, and designs they come in. Not to mention they keep drink hot or cold for hours.
Produce Bags
When going to the grocery store you should no longer be using the tear away plastic produce bags to hold your fruits and veggies. You can purchase reusable produce bags and use them over and over. They also double as a nutmilk bag and a laundry bag for your delicates! Win win win!
