Clear, even, glowing skin is the goal for all of us but not the norm for most of us. Achieving that goal is a process to say the least and requires lots of trial and error until you reach that sweet spot that gives you all the confidence that comes with clear skin. There are tons of tips we could give you to help achieve that goal but today we want to focus on “Double Cleansing” at night. If there is one thing that is going to start the process of clear, glowing skin it’s having clean skin. You need a clean base to start with. You wouldn’t bake a cake in a dirty bowl or pan right?
When using active ingredient serums that cost an arm and a leg you want to see results. Without cleaning the skin properly before applying those serums that deliver those amazing results you won’t really be getting anywhere.
So what exactly does double cleansing entail?
The method is simple, at night you start with an oil or balm cleanser . Using an oil based cleanser will draw out any unwanted dirt, oils, bacteria, sebum that end up causing congestion and eventually breakouts, bumps, uneven skin tone etc… These oils will also break down your makeup and SPF way better and more effectively than any wash off cleanser can. Why? Because matter dissolves matter and makeup and SPF contain oils, for the most part.
Now that you have removed your day’s sun care, makeup and extra dirt it’s time to clean your actual skin. This is where you do your regular cleansing with a gentle wash off cleanser. This second step is just as important as the first because you want to clean the skin so you have a nice, fresh base to apply your serums or moisturizers so that they can actually do what they’re supposed to do.
The concept is simple and only adds an extra minute to your nighttime routine, but the results are incredible. There can be a little adjustment period where your skin might purge from the oil cleansing, but rest assured it’s normal and it will pass. Having those initial little breakouts can be annoying but better out than in. Eventually whatever is stuck under the skin is going to surface and most likely it will surface as a breakout, so this is a way to just purge it out and get you one step closer to the skin you want and are working towards.
For those who aren’t sure how to oil cleanse, it’s simple. Apply the oil or balm cleanser to your skin the way you would any cleanser and give yourself a little 20 second face massage, rubbing the oil into the skin so it can work its magic. Add a little water and watch it milk up. You will see your makeup come off in the sink, which is very satisfying! Once you have rinsed, simply dry off your face and proceed to your next cleanser.
