In case we hadn’t made it clear enough, you should be wearing SPF daily. Even on the cloudiest of days it is so necessary, and it is also one of the top tools you can use to prevent aging, discoloration and so many other skin concerns that so many of us have. Something we hear a lot is that SPF tends to lead to breakouts. Fortunately, the world of SPF has evolved… A LOT over the past 5 years and there are tons of amazing options out there that will not cause you to break out and also act as a beautiful base underneath makeup.
Here at GLW, we are big fans and believers of using physical, mineral based sunscreens that don’t contain chemicals. We have found so many great options that we don’t see a reason to go in the chemical direction. Here’s a little recap of the difference between the two.
Chemical sunscreen is made with chemical compounds that absorb UV rays instead of deflecting them. The most common chemical compounds used are oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone. These chemicals change UV rays into heat, which is released from the skin and scattered. These SPFs are generally thinner in texture, clear and take 20 minutes to start working.
Physical sunscreen is also known as sun block. Generally based with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. This type of SPF works by sitting on top of the skin to deflect the damaging UV rays away from the skin. This is the type I use and suggest using because it is more natural and less abrasive on the skin. Often these will leave a white cast but below I list my faves which don’t. I promise.
JOSIE MARAN SPF 47
This is one of our go to SPF’s for years. It is super moisturizing, doesn’t clog the pores, and leaves skin really dewy. This formula comes tinted or clear and works well on all skin tones and types. However, if you are someone who doesn’t like a dewy finish, we would recommend skipping this product as it really is luminous and leaves a glowy finish.
SKINCEUTICALS PHYSICAL FUSION UV DEFENSE
This is a favorite of so many, it’s an SPG 50, extremely weightless fluid that combines 100% mineral filters with translucent colour spheres for effective broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and an even, radiant finish. This is a great option for someone who likes a more powdery finish and matte effect on skin. This is excellent for very oily skin types and sensitive as well.
COCOKIND DAILY SPF
We love Cocokind, their products are always excellent, effective and well priced. Their daily SPF is top of our list, especially when it comes to break out prone skin. This formula is hydrating yet lightweight, and contains rice starch which draws out excess sebum (which causes breakouts in the first place). We also love the finish underneath makeup, this is our go to for days spent in front of the computer as it has blue light protection as well.
DR BARBARA STURM SUN DROPS
Okay, so this is a splurge to say the least but if you are truly someone who feels that all sunscreens break them out this really is your best bet. This is a serum like texture that can be added into your moisturizer and protects the skin with SPF 50.
COLORESCIENCE SUNFORGETTABLE POWDER SPF 50
This powder is excellent for those who breakout often or get shiny because it is a powder that really evens out excess shine and oil, while protecting the skin with SPF 50. It’s also excellent for touch ups throughout the day and doesn’t affect your makeup!
