When it comes to being more sustainable making small changes here and there really add up and everyone made a few small changes to their day to day life we would all be much better off. Over the last year or so I have become a lot more cautious about where I can make little changes toward being more sustainable and less wasteful. In the kitchen I have adapted a lot of great swaps that I genuinely enjoy, Sustainable Swaps: Kitchen Edition. Moving it upstairs to my bathroom has been a little on the slower side but like anything else in life, it’s about taking small steps that eventually add up to big results.
Since today is Earth Day, I thought it was the perfect time to share some of the sustainable practices I have been putting into action in hopes of encouraging you to do the same! Like I said earlier, if we all make some adjustments it really does add up and make a big difference.
Reusable Cotton Pads
Cotton pads are something so many of us use multiple times a day. There are tons of great reusable cotton pads online that you can wash and reuse. I actually have grown to like them better than the disposable ones. This is not only better for the environment but also for your wallet! I used to spend a fortune on organic cotton pads and I would always run out! Now I have these and they last forever.
Bar Soap instead of Body Wash
I have always been a bar soap user and lover. Body wash just isn’t my thing and never has been, using a bar of soap as opposed to a body wash is the also the more eco-friendly alternative. Most bar soaps are packaged in paper or cardboard and do not come in a plastic bottle. Bar soap is also more affordable! I love Dr Bronner’s castile bar soap and have been using it for years.
Makeup Erasers
I am not a makeup wipe girl, I find they dry out the skin terribly but I know many people are. Makeup wipes are packaged in plastic for the most part and are wasteful to say the least. If you need something to remove your makeup before cleansing, try a makeup eraser. There are so many on the market. I personally have tried and really enjoy the Face Halo brand.
Electric or Bamboo Toothbrush
Conventional toothbrushes are made from plastic, need to be changed regularly and are not nearly as awesome as a good electric toothbrush. I love my Foreo toothbrush, it lasts forever and is made of silicone. If you aren’t ready to splurge on an electric toothbrush then you should consider using a bamboo toothbrush!
Menstrual Cup
Tampons and pads are slowly becoming a thing of the past. At first I was a little terrified of these menstrual cups but once you get the hang of it they are actually incredible. Also, better for your health than generic tampons and pads and much better for the environment and your wallet!
These are the changes I have made and have really stuck to. Something else that is really important is to remember to recycle your beauty products! We often just throw them into the trash when they are done so be mindful to rinse them out and recycle them. Let me know some of the ways you are being more eco friendly in the comments so I can try out your tips as well!
