Cinnamon is one of the healthiest spices in the world, but not all types of cinnamon are created equal. While there are many different varieties of cinnamon, the two most common types are Cassia and Ceylon.

Cassia cinnamon, the one most of us use, is often referred to as “fake cinnamon”. Cassia is cheaper, more readily available, slightly bitter, contains a toxic flavouring substance and most importantly, it does not have all the health benefits that Ceylon cinnamon poses.

Ceylon cinnamon on the other hand is more potent and packed with a multitude of amazing health benefits. Ceylon is often referred to as “true” cinnamon and is sweeter and lighter in colour. While finding it may be more difficult and it’s a bit more expensive than the cinnamon you find in a grocery store, it’s so good for you that it’s worth it.

While most of us are used to adding cinnamon to baked goods or savoury dishes for flavour, cinnamon’s medicinal properties have been used for thousands of years. The health benefits of cinnamon come from the bark of the cinnamon tree. The bark is ground up to make the powder that we’re all used to seeing. Since Ceylon cinnamon is so potent, just adding a small amount to your diet can beneficial to your health.

Some of the many benefits of Ceylon cinnamon include:

  • Higher levels antioxidants than any other spice
  • Immune boosting properties
  • Rich in fiber and manganese
  • Anti-microbial and anti-parasitic abilities
  • Aiding with digestion
  • Lowering blood glucose levels
  • Anti-inflammatory activity
  • Aiding with blood clotting and wound healing

Next time you buy cinnamon, try to make it Ceylon and make sure it’s organic so you can ensue you are getting the maximum benefits possible when you consume it.
