I am a major fan of all things facial massage and at this point the tools I own seem to be endless. The tool I use most and can not live without is Gua Sha. Many of you have seen me using this for years so it should come as no surprise that we sell a few of them on the shop. I’m going to break down what I use each one for to help you decide which tool is most useful and best suited for you!
Before I get into the tools let me tell you a little about the history of the Gua Sha. Gua sha is a Traditional Chinese Medicine practice that dates hundreds, if not thousands of years. It’s one of the oldest healing techniques in the world.
The 700+ year old practice has roots in traditional Chinese medicine, and has been used both as a type of family folk medicine as well as in clinical practice by licensed acupuncturists and in Chinese-style bodywork.
The roots of using Gua Sha for the face isn’t known but is believed to have been discovered by acupuncturists who noticed the lifting qualities of acupuncture, acupressure, and gentle gua sha on the face completely by chance — likely due to lymphatic drainage, and other gua sha benefits. Either way, the benefits of using Gua Sha daily both for the face and body are vast.
Benefits of facial Gua Sha:
-Brightens complexion by increasing blood flow and circulation
- Reduces puffiness around the cheeks, jawline, and undereye regions via lymphatic drainage
- Firms and lifts the skin through the pulling sensation of gua sha that helps to break up fascia (the connective tissue surrounding your muscles)
- Smoothes out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduces facial tension, including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder through targeted facial muscle engagement
- Enhances the absorption of nourishing topicals (e.g. facial oils, creams, and serums) by unblocking pathways and increasing circulation
Now for the tools!
Stainless Steel Gua Sha
This is not traditional as there is a lot of power and purpose behind the stone. However, stone breaks and steel doesn’t. I can’t tell you how many Gua Sha I have broken over the years by dropping them. I love the stainless Gua Sha for travel. I love that it’s always cool and if I really need to de-puff, I love throwing it in the fridge or freezer to get it extra cold.
Rose Quartz Gua
It’s believed that the properties in rose quartz serve to help generate skin cell renewal, as well as improve uneven or dull skin complexion. That by simply holding crystal to your skin so you can absorb its properties. I love to use this one daily, it’s gentle and easy to use, the small ridges glide nicely over the cheekbones and jawline.
White Jade Gua Sha
White Jade, a symbol of health and harmony. White Jade helps to raise one’s vibrations, awareness, and clarity. This activator of the crown and upper chakras can easily be added to your daily self-care ritual. I love to use this white jade Gua Sha when I need a little extra heavy lifting and blood flow. I also love to use this tool on my neck and in my hair. It’s larger in size and has more teeth which brings more blood flow.
