Food Facts: Tiger Nut

I bought tiger nuts a while ago because I wanted to try making tiger nut milk but I never got around to it until now. There’s been a lot of hype about tiger nut milk on social media so of course I needed to find out what it was all about.

I can now officially say that not only is tiger milk delicious (and my newest favourite nut milk) but tiger nuts are extremely healthy and something I would definitely recommend that you try.

BENEFITS OF TIGER NUTS

It may seem odd but tiger nuts are not actually nuts. The name comes from their appearance (they have stripes) and similarities to some types of nuts. This is beneficial because tiger nuts are generally not allergens so they make a great option for anyone with nut allergies. Some other benefits of tiger nuts include:

  • Great source of fiber. One serving of tiger nuts has more fiber than quinoa or chia seeds and represents half of our daily dietary requirements.
  • Immune boosting. Tiger nuts have many anti-bacterial properties which help our bodies to combat certain viruses and infections.
  • High in antioxidants, vitamin E and oleic acid which thereby defending our bodies from diseases.
  • Help decelerate the rate at which skin cells age which is why it’s often used in skin care products.
  • Controls blood sugar levels making a great snack for people with diabetes.
  • Acts as a prebiotic, providing fuel to the good bacteria in our guts allowing our digestive systems to work properly and efficiently.
  • Lowers bad cholesterol and balances out LDL and HDL levels.

In addition to the above examples, other benefits of tiger nuts include helping improve your sex life, relieving diarrhea and farting, possibly becoming a new form of biofuel and of course being a delicious and healthy snack.

In case you’re not sure where to find tiger nuts, here’s a link to where I buy mine. If you’re new make sure you go slow when you start introducing them to your diet so you can avoid being gassy or bloated. I’m currently working on some other recipes using tiger nut flour so I can’t wait to share them with you soon.
