Gut Health: The Basics

Gut health has been “the topic” for the last few years and rightfully so. Proper gut health can be complex due to the modern-day diet and toxin overload we all live with. Getting your gut microbiome in check is important for overall health. Our gut is called our “second brain”, there is a connection between our immune system, mood, skin, disease, mental health, digestion and more.  

To make it clear what “gut microbiome” means here is a good explanation. At one time, our digestive system was considered a relatively “simple” body system, consisting essentially of one long tube for our food to pass through, be absorbed, and then excreted.

The term “gut microbiome” refers specifically to the microorganisms living in your intestines. A person has about 300 to 500 different species of bacteria in their digestive tract. While some microorganisms are harmful to our health, many are incredibly beneficial and even necessary to a healthy body. This is why you will often hear people refer to bacterias as “good bacteria” and “bad bacteria”. 

Think of your gut as a filtration system made of a mesh net. Lining that net are little bugs or good bacteria that are like your little army or line of defense. Fighting to keep that mesh net safe from intruders. When we consume processed and unnatural foods, toxins, antibiotics, NSAIDs, chemicals they kill off our good bugs and allow these things to pass through our filtration system and into our bloodstream which causes inflammation. Inflammation then causes a whole world of issues in the body ranging from weight gain, digestive disorders, diseases, cancer, skin issues, mental health, hormonal imbalance and so much more.
